Flights Adelaide to Mumbai: Routes, Flight Times and Tips for South Australian Families

Flights Adelaide to Mumbai Routes Flight Times and Tips for South Australian Families

There is no non-stop flight from Adelaide yet. One good connection still gets you to Mumbai in a day. Here is how to pick it.

Quick answer: how do I fly from Adelaide to Mumbai?
There is no non-stop flight from Adelaide to Mumbai. Most travellers fly one-stop through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or a Gulf hub such as Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Total journey time is usually 15 to 24 hours, depending on the hub and the layover. Return fares start from AUD $729 per person (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). Book early for December, keep your layover between two and four hours, and call us if you are travelling with children or elderly parents.

Is there a direct flight from Adelaide to Mumbai?

No. Adelaide has no non-stop service to India. Every route to Mumbai has at least one stop.

That is not bad news. For many families, a single well-timed connection works better than one very long flight. You stretch your legs, change gates calmly, and board the second leg fresh.

Adelaide to Mumbai routes: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf

Three kinds of connection cover almost every flight from Adelaide to Mumbai, flown by major Asian and Gulf carriers.

Connect via  Typical total journey  What it is like
Singapore  About 15 to 18 hours  A seven-hour first leg, then around five and a half hours to Mumbai. Changi is clean, calm and easy with kids. Often the shortest total time.
Kuala Lumpur  About 16 to 20 hours  Similar flying time to Singapore. Layovers can be longer, and fares are often among the lower ones on the route.
Gulf hubs (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi)  About 19 to 24 hours  A long first leg of around 13 hours, then a short three-hour hop to Mumbai. Suits travellers who want one long sleep, or who are carrying on to Europe later.

Flying time alone is roughly 12 to 13 hours. The rest is layover, so the connection decides how long the day feels.

Adelaide to Mumbai flight time and what the day looks like

Many connections leave Adelaide in the evening. You sleep on the first leg, change planes in the morning, and land in Mumbai later the next day.

Mumbai runs on India Standard Time, which is four and a half to five hours behind Adelaide depending on daylight saving. It is a gentle time change.

December in Mumbai is dry season. Expect warm days, mild evenings and no monsoon. It is one of the most comfortable times of year to visit.

Mumbai fares from Adelaide and the other Australian cities

Adelaide is a smaller market with fewer flights, so its starting fares sit a little above Sydney and Melbourne. Here is how the five cities compare for return flights to Mumbai.

Route (return, per person)

From fare (AUD)

Note

Adelaide to Mumbai

from $729

One-stop only. Fewer daily options, so book early for peak dates.

Sydney to Mumbai

Melbourne to Mumbai

Perth to Mumbai

Brisbane to Mumbai

All fares from manntravel.com.au, checked 7 October 2026. Prices change daily and depend on the airline, dates and fare type.

Tempted by the lower Sydney or Melbourne fare? Add a domestic flight, extra baggage and a day of travel, and the gap usually closes. If your family is in Gujarat or Kerala, also compare Adelaide to Ahmedabad (from $819) or Adelaide to Cochin (from $753).

7 tips for booking flights from Adelaide to Mumbai

1. Book December flights now

Term 4 ends on 18 December 2026 in Victoria and New South Wales, 17 December in Western Australia and 11 December in Queensland. South Australian families finish around the same week, so check your school’s calendar. Fares for mid-December to early January rise steadily from October.

2. Keep your layover between two and four hours

Under two hours is stressful if the first flight is late. Over five hours is tiring with small children. Two to four hours gives you time to walk, eat and reach the gate without rushing.

3. Book both legs on one ticket

One ticket means your bags are checked through to Mumbai and the airline looks after you if a connection is missed.

4. Check baggage before you buy gifts

Checked allowances on Australia to India routes vary by airline and fare type. Confirm the allowance in kilograms on your ticket, then shop.

5. Fly midweek if you can

Tuesday and Wednesday departures are often cheaper than Friday and Saturday. Returning midweek helps too.

6. Lock in your fare with PayLite

Do not want to pay the full fare today? PayLite lets you secure your seats with a low deposit and pay the rest in up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly. It is available on selected refundable fares. Afterpay is accepted too.

7. Students and education staff: join MannPass

Verified Australian students, teachers and education staff can join MannPass for free. It takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. It cannot be combined with other promotions.

Arriving at Mumbai airport and getting to the suburbs or Pune

International flights land at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Terminal 2. Give yourself time at immigration, especially on late-night arrivals when several flights land together.

  • e-Visa holders: use the e-Visa counters and keep your printed approval with your passport. Our guide to the Indian e-Visa for Australians covers the paperwork step by step.
  • Getting into the city: use the pre-paid taxi counters in the arrivals hall or a ride-share app from the marked pickup area. Avoid unofficial drivers who approach you inside.
  • To the suburbs: the airport sits between Andheri and Santacruz. Western suburbs are often 30 to 60 minutes away. South Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai can take one to two hours, depending on traffic.
  • To Pune: allow three to four hours by road on the expressway. Many families book a private car in advance so a driver is waiting.

Travelling with children and elderly parents

Many of our Adelaide bookings are three generations on one trip. A few things that make the day easier.

  • Ask for help early. Wheelchair assistance at Adelaide, the hub and Mumbai is free, but it must be requested when you book. Tell us and we will add it.
  • Request special meals (vegetarian, Jain, diabetic, child meals) at least 48 hours before departure.
  • Carry medicines in hand luggage with a copy of the prescription.
  • Pick a daytime connection if you are travelling with young children. A morning layover is far easier than one at 2 am.
  • Sort visas first. Australian passport holders need an Indian visa. OCI card holders do not. Check the Smartraveller advice for India before you fly.
