Flights Sydney to Delhi: Airlines, Flight Times, Fares and Family Tips

Flights Sydney to Delhi Airlines Fares Mann Travel

Non-stop or one stop? Which day, which airline, and how do you get on to Punjab afterwards? Here is what Sydney families ask us before they book.

Quick answer: what is the best way to fly Sydney to Delhi?
Air India flies non-stop from Sydney to Delhi in about 12 hours 50 minutes. It leaves Sydney in the afternoon and lands in Delhi early the next morning. If you want a lower fare or more choice of dates, one-stop flights via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong or the Gulf are the usual alternative. On our homepage Today, flights Sydney to Delhi start from AUD $626 per person (checked 30 September 2026, prices change daily).

Which airlines fly Sydney to Delhi, and how long does it take?

Only one airline flies the route without a stop. Air India’s AI 301 departs Sydney in the afternoon and arrives at Delhi’s Terminal 3 early the next morning, after roughly 12 hours 50 minutes in the air. That is the fastest way home.

Every other option has one stop. Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific connect through their Asian hubs. Qatar Airways and Emirates go through the Gulf. Qantas sells Sydney to Delhi too, but with a stop. Only Air India is non-stop.

Route

Total travel time

Good to know

Non-stop (Air India)

About 12 h 50 m

Afternoon departure, early-morning arrival. Sells out first on holiday dates.

Via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur

About 15 to 18 hours

Short, simple transits. Often the best mix of price and comfort.

Via Bangkok or Hong Kong

About 16 to 20 hours

Good when the Singapore fares are high. Check the layover length.

Via the Gulf (Doha, Dubai)

About 20 to 24 hours

Longer, but sometimes the lowest fare and more baggage.

Travel times are approximate and depend on the airline, aircraft and connection on the day.

Non-stop or one stop: which is right for you?

Go non-stop if you are travelling with young children or elderly parents, you have a wedding or a fixed event to reach, or you simply want the trip over in one go. You board once and land once. There is no risk of a missed connection.

Go one-stop if the non-stop fare is well above your budget, your dates are flexible, or you would like a break halfway. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are easy airports for families. A two-to-three-hour layover is comfortable. Anything under ninety minutes is tight with kids and bags.

Not sure? Tell us your dates and who is travelling. We compare both and show you the difference in price and time.

When is the best time to fly Sydney to Delhi?

Delhi has three very different seasons, and the fares follow them.

  • October to March is the pleasant season. Warm days, cool nights, festival time. This is when most families go. Fares peak over the December and January school holidays and around Diwali.

  • April to June is hot, often above 40°C. Fares are usually softer, which suits travellers who plan to head to the hills or stay indoors with family.

  • July to September is the monsoon. Humid, green and often the quietest time for fares.

One more thing about winter. From late December to mid-January, Delhi gets thick morning fog that can delay early arrivals and domestic connections. We have written a separate guide on Delhi winter fog and what Australians flying in December need to know. Read it before you book a tight connection.

6 tips for booking flights Sydney to Delhi

1. Book early for December, Diwali and Easter

A large community flies this route home at the same times each year, and the lowest fare classes close first. If your dates are fixed, book two to four months ahead. If they are flexible, ask us which days are cheaper. Midweek departures often are.

2. Compare the nearby Indian airports

Heading to Punjab? Check Amritsar and Chandigarh fares as well as Delhi. Sometimes flying into Delhi and taking a domestic flight or a car north is cheaper. Sometimes a one-stop fare straight into Amritsar wins. We check both for you.

3. Watch the arrival time, not just the price

The non-stop lands early in the morning. That is fine if family are collecting you, but it makes a long day if a domestic connection or a five-hour drive follows. A one-stop that lands in the afternoon can be easier.

4. Check baggage before you compare fares

A fare that looks cheaper can come with less checked baggage. Most travellers to India carry gifts and want the full allowance. We tell you the baggage on each fare before you decide.

5. Spread the cost with PayLite

You do not need the full fare Today. PayLite lets you hold your seats with a low deposit, then pay the balance in up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly. It is available on selected refundable fares and is powered by Cashwo. Afterpay is also accepted.

6. Students and education staff: join MannPass

If you are a verified student, teacher, lecturer or education staff member in Australia, MannPass is free to join. It takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. It is valid for 30 days at a time, can be renewed, and cannot be combined with other promotions.

Arriving in Delhi and travelling on to Punjab, Jaipur or Agra

International flights from Sydney land at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Terminal 3. Immigration can take a while at peak times, so give yourself at least three hours if you have a domestic connection, and more in fog season.

  • To Amritsar or Chandigarh: domestic flights take about an hour and leave from Delhi regularly. By road, Chandigarh is roughly five hours and Amritsar roughly eight, depending on traffic.

  • To Jaipur: about an hour by air, or four to six hours by train or car.

  • To Agra: no need to fly. The fast train takes under two hours, and the expressway drive is about three to four hours.

  • Into the city: the Airport Express metro runs from Terminal 3 to New Delhi station in around twenty minutes.

Practical tips for families flying Sydney to Delhi

  • Book everyone on one booking. It keeps seats together and makes changes simpler if plans shift.

  • Sort your visa early. Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website and allow plenty of time.

  • Ask for help at the airport. Wheelchair assistance, special meals and bassinets need to be requested when you book, not at check-in.

  • Pack a change of clothes in your carry-on for each child.
