Forts, palaces, lakes and sunny winter days. Why December and January are a lovely time to take the kids to Rajasthan, and how to plan it simply.
At a glance: is a Rajasthan holiday from Australia a good idea in December and January?
Yes. The Australian summer school holidays line up with Rajasthan’s cool, dry season. Days are usually mild and sunny, and nights can be cold. Most families fly into Delhi, then visit Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur over 10 to 14 days. On our website, Melbourne to Delhi was showing from AUD $493 per person (checked 29 September 2026, prices change daily). Christmas and New Year are peak weeks, so book flights soon.
Why the summer school holidays suit Rajasthan
When Australia heats up, Rajasthan cools down. December and January are among the most comfortable months to visit. The desert heat has gone, the skies are usually clear, and walking around forts with children is actually pleasant.
The timing works for families too. School is out, many parents take leave, and teachers get a proper break. It is a rare chance to show the kids a side of India they won’t forget, and maybe visit relatives along the way.
School holiday dates differ by state. Most Australian states finish in mid to late December and go back in late January or early February. Check your state’s education department calendar before you book.
A simple 12-day Rajasthan route for families
Rajasthan is big. The best family trips cover three cities well, rather than six in a rush. This classic loop works for most ages.
Days | Where | What families enjoy |
Days 1 to 2 | Delhi | Land, rest and get over the long flight. Keep day one easy. |
Days 3 to 5 | Jaipur | Amber Fort, the City Palace and the Hawa Mahal. Colourful bazaars for older kids. |
Days 6 to 8 | Jodhpur | Mehrangarh Fort high above the blue city. Great views and plenty of space to explore. |
Days 9 to 11 | Udaipur | A boat on Lake Pichola, the City Palace, and slower days by the water. |
Day 12 | Udaipur to home | Fly Udaipur to Delhi to connect home, or drive to Ahmedabad and fly from there. |
Have more time? Add a few days with family, or a quiet stop between cities. Have less? Jaipur and Udaipur alone make a lovely week.

8 tips for a smooth Rajasthan family holiday
1. Book your flights now
The summer holidays, Christmas and New Year are some of the busiest weeks of the year for flights to India. The lower fares go first. Booking in September or October gives you the best choice.
2. Fly into Delhi, out of Udaipur or Ahmedabad
You don’t need to go back the way you came. An open-jaw booking saves a long drive at the end of the trip. Ask us to price it both ways.
3. Leave a buffer for winter fog
Morning fog in north India can delay flights in December and January. Don’t plan a tight domestic connection on the day you fly home. Give yourself a spare night in Delhi if you can.
4. Keep the pace slow
Three cities in 12 days is plenty with children. Two or three nights in each place means fewer early starts and more time to enjoy it.
5. Use a car and driver between cities
Distances look short on a map but road trips can take five or six hours. A private car with a driver is the easiest way for most families. It lets you stop when the kids need to.
6. Pack for cold mornings, not just sun
Days are usually warm, but early mornings and nights can be chilly, especially in the desert. Bring a warm layer for everyone.
7. Spread the cost with PayLite
A family trip adds up. PayLite lets you secure your flights with a low deposit and pay the rest in up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly, on selected refundable fares. Afterpay is accepted too.
8. Teachers and students: use MannPass
Working in a school, TAFE or uni? Studying? MannPass is free for verified Australian students and education staff. It takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. It lasts 30 days, can be renewed, and can’t be combined with other promotions.
Travelling to Rajasthan with kids and grandparents
Many families use this trip to bring three generations together. A little planning keeps everyone happy.
Book everyone on one booking. Seats stay together and changes are simpler.
Choose hotels with lifts. Heritage hotels are beautiful, but some have many stairs. Ask before you book if grandparents are coming.
Plan quiet afternoons. Sightseeing in the morning and rest after lunch works well for little ones and older travellers alike.
Stick to bottled or filtered water and freshly cooked food, especially for children.
Check your documents early. Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Read the latest travel advice for India on Smartraveller and consider travel insurance for the whole family.
