Catholic and independent schools can differ by a day or two, so check with your school. Christmas Day falls on a Friday in 2026, and New Year’s Eve on a Thursday.

A note on airports. Goa has two: Dabolim (GOI) near Vasco in the south, and Manohar International at Mopa (GOX) in the north. They are one to two hours apart by road. Book the one closest to where you are staying.
Where to stay: picking the right part of Goa
North Goa (Calangute, Baga, Candolim, Anjuna). Lively, busy and full of places to eat. The centre of New Year’s Eve parties. Great for teens and young adults, but loud at peak time.
South Goa (Colva, Benaulim, Palolem, Cavelossim). Calmer beaches and more space. A favourite with families, young children and older parents.
Panaji and Old Goa. Heritage streets and grand old churches, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus. A lovely base for a traditional Christmas.
Crowds and prices over peak season
Let’s be honest. The week from Christmas to New Year is the busiest of the year in Goa. Flights, hotels and even taxis cost more. Popular beaches get crowded, and roads in North Goa can be slow.
That doesn’t mean you should skip it. It means you should plan.
1. Book flights now
Late December fares climb as seats fill. September and October are a good time to lock in your dates.
2. Book your stay at the same time
Good family rooms in Goa go early for Christmas week. Many places also set minimum stays over New Year.
3. Fly out as school finishes
Leaving a day or two after term ends often beats the weekend rush. Coming back midweek in January can help too.
4. Consider going a little later
If Christmas Day itself isn’t a must, early to mid January is still warm and dry, and usually calmer.

Practical tips for families
Check your visa early. Australian passport holders need an Indian e-Visa, visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly.

Pack light layers and sun protection. Days are warm. Church services and evenings call for something modest.
