Term 4 ends in mid-December. Here is when each state finishes, which weekends will be busiest for flights to India, when to book and how to spread the cost.
At a glance: school holiday flights to India from Australia
Queensland and South Australia finish Term 4 on Friday 11 December 2026. Western Australia finishes Thursday 17 December, Victoria Friday 18 December and NSW public schools on or about Thursday 17 December. The busiest departures for India will be the weekend of 12–13 December, then 18–20 December, then Christmas week. Return flights crunch in the last ten days of January. Book now, fly a day or two off-peak, and use PayLite to pay weekly before you travel.
When does Term 4 end in each state?
Every summer the same thing happens. School finishes on a Thursday or Friday, and thousands of families want to be on a flight to India that same weekend. Your state’s last day tells you which weekend to avoid, or at least to book early.
State | Last day of Term 4, 2026 | Busiest departure weekend | Our advice |
QLD | Friday 11 December | Sat 12 – Sun 13 December | You finish a week before the eastern states. Fly that first weekend and you beat the big rush. |
SA | Friday 11 December | Sat 12 – Sun 13 December | Same early finish. Adelaide seats are limited, so book now. |
WA | Thursday 17 December | Fri 18 – Sun 20 December | Perth has good one-stop options to Ahmedabad, Kochi, Mumbai and Delhi. Thursday night flights fill first. |
NSW | Thursday 17 December* | Fri 18 – Sun 20 December | Sydney is the busiest airport that weekend. Consider Monday 21 December instead. |
VIC | Friday 18 December | Fri 18 – Sun 20 December | The last state to finish. Friday night and Saturday flights out of Melbourne sell out early. |
Dates are for government schools, taken from each state education department’s published 2026 calendar on 8 October 2026. *NSW: taken from NSW public school calendars; confirm with your school. Independent and Catholic schools often finish a few days earlier. Check your own school’s calendar.
Diwali is done. Christmas is the real peak
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. Fares for late October and early November have already climbed. But by the time school finishes in December, Diwali traffic is long gone.
What drives December and January prices is Christmas and New Year. Australia shuts down for the summer. Families travel home to India for weddings, winter festivals and long stays with grandparents. The whole country is on the move at once. For flights to India, the peak runs from about 18 December to 3 January on the way out, and from about 15 to 26 January on the way back. Book those dates first.
When should I book summer holiday flights to India?
Now. We are about ten weeks out from the first school finishing day. In a normal year, the lowest fare classes on the popular weekends are gone by early November.
When you book | What to expect | Our advice |
October | Good choice of dates and airlines | Book now. If money is tight, use PayLite and pay it off before you fly. |
November | Peak weekends thinning out | Stay flexible by a day or two. Look at the midweek after school ends. |
December | Few seats, high fares | Call us. One-stop routes and alternate Indian airports can still save a trip. |
For context, these are the lowest fares on our homepage today, checked 8 October 2026, prices change daily: Melbourne to Mumbai from AUD $569 per person, Sydney to Mumbai from AUD $563, Brisbane to Hyderabad from AUD $628, Perth to Kochi from AUD $610 and Adelaide to Mumbai from AUD $729. These are starting fares across the year. Expect December departures to cost more, which is exactly why booking early matters.
How PayLite spreads the cost of a family trip
A family of four flying in peak season is a big outlay in one go. PayLite is built for this. You pay a low deposit to secure selected refundable fares, then pay the balance in weekly instalments, up to 26 of them, with everything settled before you fly. It is powered by Cashwo.
Book in October for a mid-December departure and you have roughly nine or ten weekly payments. Ask us for the exact schedule when you book. We also accept Afterpay. Full details are in our PayLite explained post.
7 ways to make school holiday flights to India easier
1. Fly the Monday or Tuesday, not the Friday night
Leaving on Monday 21 or Tuesday 22 December instead of Friday 18 December costs you two days at home but can save a good amount per seat. For a family of five, that adds up.
2. Queensland and South Australian families: use your head start
You finish a week early. Fly out on 12 or 13 December, before Victoria, NSW and WA join the queue.
3. Come back after Australia Day
Most schools go back in the last week of January 2027. The weekend before is the busiest return window. If your school allows it, or you are flying with pre-schoolers, returning in early February is often calmer and cheaper.
4. Consider a different Indian airport
If Delhi is full, Amritsar or Chandigarh may not be. If Mumbai is dear, check Ahmedabad or Pune. Victorian families heading to Gujarat can read our new Melbourne to Ahmedabad route guide.
5. Book the whole family together
One booking keeps seats together and makes any change simpler. Give us every name exactly as it appears on the passport.
6. Sort passports and visas now
Check every passport has at least six months left, including the children’s. Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card, applied for through the official Indian visa website. Do it in October, not the week you fly.
7. Teachers and education staff: join MannPass
You get the same summer break as your students. MannPass is free for verified Australian teachers, lecturers and education staff and takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. It is valid 30 days from verification, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
Travelling with children in the summer peak
Peak season means full flights and busy airports. A little planning helps.
- Request child meals and bassinets at booking. They are limited and go to whoever asks first.
- Pick your layover with care. Two to four hours in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf is enough to stretch and eat without exhausting small children.
- Arrive at the airport early. Allow three hours for an international departure in the week before Christmas.
- Pack for two climates. North India is cold in December and January. South India is warm. Our December packing guide covers what to take.
- Check the travel advice. The Australian Government’s latest advice for India is at Smartraveller.
