Going home to India this December? Add seven to nine days of lakes, forts and the blue city. Here is how to plan an Udaipur and Jodhpur holiday from Australia, flying in through Delhi or Mumbai.
At a glance: an Udaipur and Jodhpur holiday from Australia
Fly from Australia into Delhi or Mumbai, then take a short domestic flight to Udaipur (about 80 to 90 minutes). Spend three nights by the lakes, drive about five hours to Jodhpur, spend two or three nights under Mehrangarh Fort, then fly back to your gateway city. December brings warm days and cool nights, so it suits children and grandparents. Gateway fares start from AUD $493.13 per person to Delhi and AUD $569 to Mumbai from Melbourne, one-way, checked 9 October 2026, prices change daily. Domestic flights are extra.
Why Udaipur and Jodhpur suit the December school holidays
Victorian schools finish on Friday 18 December 2026, New South Wales around 17 December, and Queensland on Friday 11 December. The summer break runs into late January 2027. Most of our families use it to go home, and many want one short trip the children will remember.
Udaipur and Jodhpur fit that gap well. They sit close together in southern Rajasthan, the old kingdoms of Mewar and Marwar. One is about lakes and palaces. The other is a fort on a cliff above a town painted blue. Together they make a compact circuit without long drives.
December weather is the other reason. Days are usually warm and sunny, in the low to mid twenties. Nights are cool, often below 10 degrees. Pack a jumper for boat rides and sunset fort visits.

What to see in Udaipur
City Palace. Palaces built over four centuries, rising from the edge of Lake Pichola. Mirror work, miniature paintings and courtyards. Go early and allow two to three hours.
Lake Pichola. The boat ride from the City Palace jetty is what children talk about afterwards. You pass the Lake Palace and stop at Jag Mandir island. Go late afternoon.
What to see in Jodhpur
Mehrangarh Fort. One of the great forts of India, on a rock above the city. Inside are palanquins, weapons and painted ceilings. The audio guide keeps older children engaged. Allow a full morning.
The blue city. The old town below the fort is painted in shades of indigo. Walk it early with a local guide.
Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan. The white marble memorial beside the fort is quiet and cool. Umaid Bhawan Palace, across town, is part hotel, part museum and part royal residence, with a vintage car collection children like.
6 family tips for Udaipur and Jodhpur in December
1. Book the domestic flights with your international ticket
If your flight from Australia runs late, a separately booked domestic ticket may be lost. We book the whole journey together wherever possible, so the connection is protected.
2. Leave a buffer day on either side
Arrive in Delhi or Mumbai the day before your Udaipur flight, and be back in your gateway city the day before you fly home. December fog can delay early flights out of Delhi.
3. Hire a car and driver for the Udaipur to Jodhpur road
The drive is about five hours on mostly good highway. A car and driver lets you stop at Ranakpur and spares grandparents a bus station.
4. Stay in a haveli or heritage hotel
Both cities have old mansions and small palaces turned into hotels, with courtyards, rooftop dining and family rooms. Book early. Heritage properties fill first in December.
5. Pack for two seasons in one day
Twenty-five degrees at lunch, under ten at breakfast. Layers work best: a sun hat for the forts, a jumper and closed shoes for evenings and boat rides.
6. Students: use MannPass before you book
Verified Australian students and education staff can join MannPass for free and take an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
Paying for a family trip over the summer break
PayLite, powered by Cashwo, lets you secure selected refundable fares now with a low deposit and spread the balance over up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly. Afterpay is also accepted. Booking in October for December gives you the most weeks to pay it down.
