Exams nearly done? Here is how to get home to family for the long break, on a student budget, without the December rush.
Quick answer: when should students book flights home to India?
Book now, before the December peak. Most semester 2 exams run through November, and the busiest travel weeks are mid-December to late January. Booking in September or October gives you the best choice of dates. Verified students can get an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights with free MannPass. Short on cash Today? PayLite lets you pay a low deposit, then weekly instalments. Fly back a week or two before semester 1 starts.
When semester 2 ends, and when to fly
For most university students in Australia, semester 2 exams run through November. The exact dates depend on your uni. Some start in early November. Others run into early December. Check your own academic calendar before you book anything.
Once exams are done, you have a long break. Semester 1 usually starts in late February or early March. That is a great stretch of time at home with family. But you are not the only one with this plan. School holidays, Christmas and the wedding season all land in the same weeks.
When you fly | What to expect | Our advice |
Late November to early December | Busy, but not yet peak | The sweet spot. Fly soon after your last exam, before school holidays begin. |
Mid-December to early January | Peak demand | Highest fares and fullest flights. Book as early as you can. |
Return: late January | Busy | Many families fly back before school goes back. Consider a February return. |
Return: February | Easier | Aim to land a week or two before semester 1, so you can settle in. |
What it costs, and how to budget
Fares change every day, but here is a snapshot from our website. These are the lowest “from” fares we showed on 26 September 2026.
Route | From (per person, checked 26 September 2026) |
Melbourne to Delhi | AUD $493.13 |
Sydney to Bengaluru | AUD $628 |
Brisbane to Hyderabad | AUD $628 |
Perth to Delhi | AUD $631 |
Adelaide to Mumbai | AUD $729 |
Prices change daily. December dates will usually cost more than these starting fares, which is why booking early matters.
Most students juggle rent, fees and part-time work. So think about the total cost, not just the fare. Add checked baggage if your fare does not include it, travel to the airport, and a little spending money for the layover.
7 tips for students flying home to India
1. Book before the December peak
The cheaper seats on popular December dates go first. If you know your last exam date, book now. If your timetable is not out yet, look for a fare that allows changes.
2. Get free MannPass and save AUD $25
MannPass is free for verified students and education staff in Australia. That includes international students and Indian-Australian students at uni or TAFE. It takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. Verification takes about 90 seconds. Your code is valid for 30 days, and students can renew each term. It cannot be combined with other promotions.
3. Spread the cost with PayLite
Paid weekly from a part-time job? PayLite matches that rhythm. You pay a low deposit to lock in your seat, then up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly. It is available on selected refundable fares. We also accept Afterpay.
4. Fly soon after your last exam
Leaving in late November or the first days of December often beats the school holiday rush. You also get more time at home.
5. Plan your return around semester 1
Do not cut it too fine. Land a week or two before classes start. That gives you time to sort rent, work shifts and enrolment.
6. Know your baggage allowance, both ways
Most students fly home light and come back heavy. Check the allowance for your fare before you pack. If you need more, adding extra baggage in advance is usually easier than paying at the airport.
7. Declare food when you come back
Australia has strict biosecurity rules. Homemade snacks, spices and sweets from family must be declared on arrival. When in doubt, declare it.
Documents to carry, and family practicalities
Every student’s situation is different, so keep this as a checklist and confirm the details with official sources.
