Swap a 35-degree Australian December for cool mountain air, tea gardens and a heritage toy train. Here is how an Ooty holiday from Australia works, step by step.
At a glance: an Ooty holiday from Australia
Ooty and Coonoor sit in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiri Hills, more than 2,000 metres up. In December and January the days are dry and mild and the nights are cold, the opposite of an Australian summer. Fly to Bengaluru (Sydney–Bengaluru from AUD $628 per person, checked 12 October 2026, prices change daily), take a short domestic flight to Coimbatore, then drive about three hours up the hill or ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam. Allow four to five nights across the two towns.
Why the Nilgiris in December and January
Australian summer school holidays run from mid-December to late January. In Victoria, Term 4 ends on Friday 18 December 2026. Other states finish on different dates, so check your own state’s calendar before you book.
The catch is that December in Australia is hot, and the plains of South India are warm too. The Nilgiri Hills are the answer. Ooty sits high enough that December and January are the dry, cool season: clear sunny days, crisp air and nights that can drop into single digits. Children who have spent the year in shorts get to wear a jumper. Everyone gets tea.
It is also Indian peak season in the hills. Christmas week and New Year are busy with domestic travellers, so hotels and train seats go early. To compare, see our guide to Munnar and the Kerala hills in the summer holidays.
Getting there from Australia
There is no international airport in the hills. The journey has three parts: Australia to South India, a domestic hop or a drive to Coimbatore, then the climb to Ooty.

Australia to India | Fly to Bengaluru | One-stop or non-stop, depending on city | Sydney–Bengaluru from AUD $628, Brisbane–Bengaluru from AUD $668 per person (checked 12 October 2026, prices change daily). |

| Drive from Bengaluru | 6 to 7 hours | A long day with children. |
Up to Ooty | Car from Coimbatore airport | About 3 hours (85 km) | A winding ghat road. Go in daylight and take it slowly. |
| Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam | About 5 hours (46 km) | Mettupalayam is about 45 km from the airport. The train is the highlight of the trip for most families. |

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
This is the reason many families choose Ooty over other hill stations. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage line, opened in 1908, that climbs 46 kilometres from Mettupalayam on the plains to Ooty, passing through Coonoor and 16 tunnels on the way. The regular service leaves Mettupalayam early in the morning and takes around five hours to reach Ooty. It is slow on purpose, and the views over the tea slopes are the point.
A few things to know:
- Book early through IRCTC. Seats are limited and the school holiday weeks sell out. The station codes are Coonoor ONR and Ooty UAM (Udhagamandalam).
- Stay near the start. Because the train leaves early, sleep in Coimbatore or Mettupalayam the night before rather than racing up from Bengaluru.
- Short on patience? Ride only the Mettupalayam to Coonoor section, which has the dramatic climb, and finish the trip to Ooty by car in under an hour.
What to do in Ooty, Coonoor and Pykara
Base yourself in Ooty for the sights and in Coonoor for the quiet. They are about 20 kilometres apart.
- Ooty. The Government Botanical Garden is a gentle morning for all ages. Ooty Lake has pedal boats that children love. Doddabetta Peak is the highest point in the Nilgiris, with a short drive to the top and a viewpoint on a clear day.
- Coonoor. Sim’s Park is a hillside garden with old trees and a small lake. The tea estates around town offer walks and factory visits where you can see the leaf being processed. Dolphin’s Nose is a cliff-top lookout over the valley; go early before the cloud rolls in.
- Pykara. About 20 kilometres from Ooty, with a lake, boating and waterfalls. An easy half-day with a picnic.

6 tips for Australian families
1. Check your state's term dates first
Victoria finishes on Friday 18 December 2026. Other states set their own dates, and the late-January return dates differ too. Confirm yours, then book just outside the rush if you can.
2. Book the train, then build the trip around it
Train seats are the scarcest thing on this itinerary. Secure the IRCTC booking as soon as it opens for your date, then fix hotels and the domestic flight around it.
3. Pack for two climates
You will leave Australia in summer clothes and arrive in a place where nights can be close to freezing. Pack warm layers, a beanie and socks for everyone, including the grandparents.
4. Take the hill roads in daylight
The ghat roads up to Coonoor and Ooty have many hairpin bends. Travel in the morning, keep motion sickness tablets handy for the children, and build in stops.
5. Spread the cost with PayLite
With PayLite you secure your seats with a low deposit and pay the rest in up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly. It is available on selected refundable fares, and we also accept Afterpay.
6. Students and teachers: join MannPass
Verified students and education staff in Australia can join our Latest Offer for free. It takes an extra AUD $50 off eligible return flights to India. It cannot be combined with other promotions.
Two more practical points. Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card; apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly. And check the latest travel advice on Smartraveller. Carry regular medicines with you, as hill-town pharmacies are small.
