School finishes in mid-December. Kerala is at its best. Here is how Australian families can fit a houseboat night or two into the trip home.
At a glance: a Kerala backwaters houseboat from Australia
Fly into Kochi, drive about an hour and a half to Alleppey or Kumarakom, and board a private houseboat with its own crew and cook. One night covers the classic afternoon cruise, sunset dinner and lake sunrise. Two nights let you reach quieter canals. December and January are dry, warm and busy, and they line up exactly with Australia’s summer school holidays. Book the flights first, as early as you can. The houseboat is the easy part.
Why the summer school holidays are the right time
Most Australian families visit Kerala for the relatives first. The houseboat is the treat you add on.
The weather is on your side. Kerala’s dry season runs roughly October to February. December and January days are warm, around the high 20s to low 30s, with little rain and lower humidity. Mornings on the water are cool and still.
The dates line up. Term 4 ends between 11 and 18 December across the states, and students go back in the last week of January. Six weeks: enough for family time, a few days on the backwaters and a jet-lag buffer either side.
Everyone else knows it too. This is Kerala’s peak season. Houseboats fill around Christmas and New Year, and flights from Australia climb from October. That is the one thing to plan around.
Alleppey or Kumarakom: which houseboat base?
Both sit on Vembanad Lake, Kerala’s largest, about 85 km south of Kochi airport and an hour and a half to two hours by road. Most boats cruise between the two anyway. The difference is the feel.
Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the houseboat capital. Hundreds of boats, every size and budget, and the widest choice of canals, villages and paddy fields. Busier at the jetty, quiet once you are moving. Best for first-timers and families who want choice.
Kumarakom is smaller and calmer, on the eastern shore. Fewer boats, a bird sanctuary, and resorts if you want a hotel night before or after. Best for families with grandparents who prefer a slower pace.
Our honest advice: pick on logistics. Relatives in Kottayam? Kumarakom is on your doorstep. Ernakulam, Thrissur or further north? Alleppey is the simpler drive.
One night or two? What a houseboat stay includes
Houseboats, or kettuvallams, are converted rice barges with one to four air-conditioned bedrooms, a lounge deck and a crew of two or three, including a cook. Meals are Kerala home food: rice, fish curry, thoran, appam at breakfast. Mention allergies and spice levels when you board.
Option | What it usually includes | Who it suits |
Day cruise | Four to six hours on the water with lunch. No overnight. | Very young children, elderly parents who prefer to sleep ashore. |
One night | Board around midday. Lunch, afternoon cruise, a canal stop, moor before sunset. Dinner and breakfast on board. Off by 9am. | Most families. The classic experience; fits a tight itinerary. |
Two nights | As above, plus a full second day cruising narrower canals and quieter villages that day boats never reach. | Families with teenagers, anyone who wants to slow down properly. |
Boats cruise in the afternoon and again in the morning, and moor overnight. A one-night stay is roughly five hours of actual cruising; two nights roughly doubles it.
Costs vary widely by boat size, season and category, with Christmas week at the top of the range. We do not publish houseboat prices here because they change with the season; ask us for a current quote with your flights.
A sample 7-day Kerala plan around a family visit
This assumes you fly into Kochi (Cochin International Airport) with relatives near Ernakulam. Swap days around if family is in Thrissur or Kottayam.
Day | Where | Plan |
Day 1 | Kochi | Land early morning after the one-stop flight. Family pickup. Sleep, eat, catch up. |
Day 2 | Kochi | Fort Kochi with the kids: Chinese fishing nets, old streets, an evening Kathakali show. |
Day 3 | Kochi to Alleppey | Leave after breakfast, 90 minutes by car. Board around midday. Cruise, sunset, dinner on deck. |
Day 4 | Backwaters | Sunrise on the lake. Second day in the narrow canals if you took two nights; otherwise disembark at 9am and drive to Kumarakom. |
Day 5 | Kumarakom | Bird sanctuary at dawn, pool for the kids, slow lunch. Grandparents love this day. |
Day 6 | Back to family | Drive to Ernakulam, Thrissur or Kottayam. Family dinner, the big one. |
Day 7 | Kochi | Shopping for the trip home, or a quiet day. The rest of the holiday is family time. |
Book the flights first: Australian school holiday dates
This is the part that decides your holiday. Houseboats can usually be found a few weeks out. December flights to Kochi cannot. The week after school breaks up is the busiest of the year on Australia–India routes.
State | Term 4 ends 2026 | Students return 2027 | Departs from |
Queensland | Friday 11 December | Around 27 January | Brisbane |
Western Australia | Thursday 17 December | Late January | Perth |
New South Wales | Friday 18 December | Around 27 January | Sydney |
Victoria | Friday 18 December | Around 28 January | Melbourne |
South Australia | Mid-December (check your school) | Late January | Adelaide |
Queensland families get a head start: flying out 12 or 13 December, before the other states break up, often means better fares and more seat choice. Everyone else: aim for the first days after term ends, or the week before Christmas once the first rush has passed. Coming home in the third week of January rather than the last weekend usually helps too.
For today’s from-fares to Kochi from every Australian city and the one-stop routes compared, see our Perth to Kochi flight . Fares to Cochin start from AUD $559 per person return from Sydney and AUD $610 from Perth (checked 5 October 2026, prices change daily).
6 practical tips for a family houseboat trip
1. Book a private boat, not a shared one
Shared boats are cheaper per head but you lose control of the schedule, food and noise. For a family with children or grandparents, a private boat is worth it.
2. Check the air-conditioning hours
On many boats the bedroom air-conditioning runs at set hours, often overnight only. Ask before booking, especially if an elderly parent needs it in the afternoon.
3. Pack light for the boat
Leave the big suitcases with family. One small bag per person, hats, mosquito repellent for the evening, and a torch. Cabins are compact.
4. Life jackets and little ones
Ask that the operator carries life jackets for children, and keep toddlers with an adult while cruising. The water is calm but the decks are open.
5. Sort documents early
Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before December, and check Smartraveller before you fly.
6. Spread the cost and use your student discount
