Heading home to Maharashtra from Melbourne? Here is how the one-stop routes compare, how long each one takes, and what to check before you book for the whole family.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Melbourne to Mumbai?
Most flights Melbourne to Mumbai are one-stop. The usual hubs are Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi, or Delhi with Air India. Total journey time is usually 14 to 20 hours, depending on the connection. Air India has also flown a seasonal non-stop, so check your dates. Fares start from AUD $569 per person (checked 12 October 2026, prices change daily). Book early for December and January, keep the family on one booking, and ask about PayLite to spread the cost.
Is there a non-stop flight, and how long does the trip take?
For most of the year, Melbourne to Mumbai means one stop. Air India has operated a non-stop Melbourne–Mumbai service on a seasonal basis, usually around three flights a week over the Australian summer, with the route paused through the Australian winter. When it runs, the flight takes roughly 12 to 13 hours. Schedules change by season, so call us and we will check your dates.
The one-stop routes are the dependable option, and they are not a step down. You get a wider choice of airline and departure time, more fares to compare, and a break of two or three hours in the middle, which children and older parents often welcome.
Door to door, allow 14 to 20 hours. Routes through Asia are at the shorter end. Routes through the Gulf are at the longer end, because the hub sits well to the west of India and you fly past Mumbai before you fly back to it. Most Melbourne departures leave in the evening or early afternoon, so you land in Mumbai in the small hours or early morning. Mumbai is 5.5 hours behind Melbourne during daylight saving, and 4.5 hours behind for the rest of the year, which helps the body clock on the way over.
One-stop hubs compared
Here is how the main connections stack up. Flying times are approximate and exclude the time you spend on the ground at the hub.
Hub | Airline | Approx. flying time | Good to know |
Singapore | Singapore Airlines | About 7.5 h + 5.5 h | Two medium legs. Changi is easy with children. Usually the shortest total trip. |
Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia Airlines | About 8 h + 5.5 h | Often good value. Check the connection time, as some are long. |
Bangkok | Thai Airways | About 9 h + 4.5 h | Short final leg into Mumbai. Suits families who like a longer first sleep. |
Hong Kong | Cathay Pacific | About 9 h + 6.5 h | Longer second leg. Worth comparing when Asian fares are tight. |
Dubai | Emirates | About 14 h + 3 h | One long leg, then a short hop. Large aircraft, many daily Mumbai flights. |
Doha | Qatar Airways | About 14.5 h + 3.5 h | Similar pattern to Dubai. Good when you want a single long sleep. |
Abu Dhabi | Etihad | About 14 h + 3 h | Quieter hub. Often competitive on fares to Mumbai. |
Delhi | Air India | About 12.5 h + 2 h | Non-stop to India, then a domestic hop. You clear immigration at Delhi. |
A simple way to choose: if your children are small, two medium legs through Asia are easier to manage than one 14-hour leg. If you are travelling as adults and want to sleep once and be done, the Gulf hubs work well. If you want to be on Indian soil as soon as possible, Air India via Delhi gets you there, and your onward flight to Mumbai is a short domestic sector.

6 tips for booking Melbourne to Mumbai
1. Book the summer holidays early
Victorian Term 4 ends on Friday 18 December 2026. Many Melbourne families want to leave that weekend and come back in late January, and airlines price those dates accordingly. If you can fly out a few days before term ends, or return a week before school starts, the fare difference is often real money for a family of four.
2. Pick the hub by who is travelling
Think about the longest leg, not the total. A 14-hour leg with a toddler is a different trip to two 7-hour legs with a walk around Changi in between. Older parents may prefer the opposite: one long sleep and fewer transfers.
3. Watch the layover length
Two to four hours is the sweet spot. Under 90 minutes leaves little room if the first flight is late. Over six hours is tiring with children, unless the airline offers a lounge or hotel option.
4. Compare baggage allowances, not just fares
Allowances differ by airline and fare type. If you are carrying gifts, sweets and extra bags for family, a slightly dearer fare with a bigger allowance can work out cheaper than paying for extra bags at the airport.
5. Spread the cost with PayLite
PayLite lets you secure your seats with a low deposit and pay the rest in up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly. It is available on selected refundable fares, and we also accept Afterpay. Read how it works in our PayLite guide.
6. Students and teachers: join MannPass
Verified students and education staff in Australia can join MannPass for free. It takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. It cannot be combined with other promotions.
Travelling with family: the practical checks
- Keep everyone on one booking. Seats stay together and changes are simpler. Tell us about infants, bassinets and special meals at booking time.
- Documents first. Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you travel, and check the latest advice on Smartraveller.
- Arriving in Mumbai. International flights use Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Many flights land between midnight and dawn, so arrange your pick-up in advance.
- Season. December to February is Mumbai’s most comfortable time of year, warm and dry. The monsoon runs from about June to September, so pack for rain if you travel then.
- Wheelchair and assistance. If grandparents are travelling, ask us to request assistance at both airports and at the hub. It is free, but it needs to be booked ahead.
