Heading home to Gujarat from Western Australia? Here is how the one-stop routes work, what the trip really takes, and what to sort before you fly.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Perth to Ahmedabad?
There is no non-stop flight. Most WA families fly one-stop through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi. Total travel time is usually 13 to 20 hours depending on the layover. Fares start from AUD $658 per person (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). Book early for December and January, ask for vegetarian or Jain meals when you book, and use PayLite to spread the cost in weekly instalments.
Flights Perth to Ahmedabad: the routes that work
Perth is the closest Australian capital to India. That is good news for Gujarati families in WA. The flying time is shorter than from the east coast, and the one-stop options are easy to manage, even with young children or elderly parents.
The three main ways to get there:
- Via Singapore. Perth to Singapore is about five hours. Singapore to Ahmedabad is about five hours more. With a short layover, the whole trip can be done in around 13 to 15 hours. Singapore Airlines flies both sectors, and Changi is one of the easiest airports in the world for a transit.
- Via Kuala Lumpur. A similar flying time to the Singapore option. Fares on this routing are sometimes lower, though connection times can be longer. Worth comparing.
- Via the Gulf. Emirates (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha) and Etihad (Abu Dhabi) all fly to Ahmedabad. The first leg from Perth is long, around 11 hours, then a short three-hour hop to Ahmedabad. Total time is usually 17 to 20 hours. The upside is one long sleep on the first leg and a wide choice of departure days.
Which is best? If you want the shortest trip, go via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. If you are watching the fare or need a particular date, the Gulf carriers often have the seats. Our team compares all three for you.

Arriving at Ahmedabad airport and getting into the city
You land at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (airport code AMD). International flights use Terminal 2. It is a modern terminal, and immigration is usually steady rather than slow, though late-night arrivals from the Gulf can be busy.
The airport sits in the north-east of the city, roughly 10 kilometres from the centre. Most families are met by relatives. If you are not, prepaid taxis and app-based cabs are available at the terminal, and the drive into the city takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
Going further afield?
- Gandhinagar is about 25 to 30 kilometres north. Around 45 minutes by road.
- Vadodara is roughly 110 kilometres south. Two to two and a half hours by car, or a short train ride from Ahmedabad’s main station.
- Surat is further, about 260 to 270 kilometres. Allow four to five hours by road, or take the train. Vadodara and Surat also have their own airports with domestic connections, which can suit some families better. Ask us.
6 tips for WA's Gujarati families
1. Request vegetarian or Jain meals when you book, not at the airport
Airlines carry a limited number of special meals. An Asian vegetarian, Jain or Hindu vegetarian meal has to be ordered in advance, usually at least 24 to 48 hours before departure. Tell us when you book and we add it to every sector.
2. Book the whole family on one booking
Grandparents, parents and children on a single booking means seats together, one set of changes if plans shift, and one point of contact if something goes wrong.
3. Choose the layover that suits the oldest and youngest travellers
A two-hour connection is fine for adults. For elderly parents or toddlers, three to four hours is kinder. It allows time for a wheelchair transfer, a proper meal and a change of clothes. Ask us about wheelchair assistance. It is free, but it must be requested in advance.
4. Pack for two climates
Perth in summer and Ahmedabad in winter are very different. December and January mornings in Gujarat can be cool, so carry a light jumper or shawl. From March onwards it gets hot quickly.
5. Check your visa and passport early
Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and make sure every passport has at least six months left. Check the latest advice on Smartraveller too.
6. Use MannPass if you are a student or work in education
MannPass is free for verified Australian students and education staff. It takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
Flying with children and elderly parents
Perth’s Gujarati community is a close one. Families travel together for weddings, Navratri, Uttarayan and simply to see grandparents. Most of the bookings we take for this route are for three or more people, and many include someone over 70 or under five.
A few things that make the trip easier:
- Fly out in the evening. Children sleep on the first leg and arrive in better shape.
- Carry medicines in hand luggage with the prescription. Keep a list of dosages for parents who travel alone.
- Hand luggage should include a change of clothes, snacks and a charger. Checked bags occasionally arrive a day late on one-stop routes.
- Book a bassinet row for babies under about 10 kilograms. These go early.
- Spread the cost with PayLite. PayLite lets you lock in your fare with a low deposit and pay the rest in up to 26 weekly instalments on selected refundable fares. Afterpay is also accepted.
