Heading home to Telangana or Andhra? Here is how the Melbourne to Hyderabad journey works, what it costs right now, and how to make it easier with kids and grandparents.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Melbourne to Hyderabad?
There is no non-stop flight from Melbourne to Hyderabad. You fly one-stop, usually through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or a Gulf hub such as Doha or Dubai. Total journey time is typically 15 to 18 hours via South East Asia, and 20 hours or more via the Gulf. Fares start from AUD $629 per person return (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). Students and teachers save an extra AUD $25 with MannPass, and PayLite lets you pay in weekly instalments.
Which route is best from Melbourne to Hyderabad?
Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad is well connected to Asia and the Middle East, so you have good options. All of them involve one stop. The question is which stop suits your family.
Via Singapore. The shortest overall journey for most travellers. Melbourne to Singapore is around eight hours, then Singapore to Hyderabad is around four and a half. Singapore Airlines flies both legs. Changi is easy with children, with play areas, quiet spots and short walks between gates.
Via Kuala Lumpur. Similar flying time to Singapore and often a little cheaper. Malaysia Airlines connects Melbourne and Hyderabad through KL. Layovers can be short, so check the connection time before you book.
Via the Gulf. Qatar Airways through Doha and Emirates through Dubai both serve Hyderabad. The long leg from Melbourne is 13 to 14 hours, then a shorter hop to India. Total time is longer, but these routes often have more seats in peak weeks, and the arrival times into Hyderabad can suit families who want to land in the morning.
Our advice: compare the total door-to-door time, not just the fare. A two-hour layover with a short second flight is much easier with a toddler than a six-hour wait in the middle of the night.
Melbourne to Hyderabad flight times at a glance
Route | Typical total time | Good to know |
Via Singapore | About 15 to 17 hours | Shortest overall. Family-friendly airport. Fares can be higher in school holidays. |
Via Kuala Lumpur | About 15 to 18 hours | Often good value. Check the layover length. |
Via Doha or Dubai | About 20 to 24 hours | Longer, but more capacity at peak times. One long leg, one short leg. |
Times are a general guide and depend on the layover. Hyderabad is five and a half hours behind Melbourne during Australian daylight saving time, so a flight leaving Melbourne in the morning usually lands in Hyderabad late the same night.

Arriving at Hyderabad airport and getting into the city
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport sits at Shamshabad, on the southern edge of Hyderabad. It is a modern, well-run airport, and immigration is usually smoother than at the bigger Indian gateways. Still, allow time after a late-night arrival.
The airport is a fair way from where most families are heading. The city centre is roughly 30 kilometres away by the airport expressway. HITEC City, Gachibowli and Kondapur in the west are a little further, and Secunderabad to the north is further again. In light traffic that is 45 minutes to an hour. In peak hour, plan for more.
Your options for the last leg:
- Family pick-up. The most common choice. Share your flight number so they can track the arrival. The pick-up area is clearly signed.
- App cabs and prepaid taxis. Both work well from the airport. Prepaid counters are inside the terminal and the fare is fixed before you go.
- Airport bus. Public airport buses run to several points around the city. Good value if you are travelling light, less practical with four suitcases and a sleeping child.
Carry a little Indian cash for small expenses, and have your family’s address written down in case your phone is flat after the flight.
Tips for Telugu families flying from Melbourne
Melbourne’s Telugu community has grown a lot over the past decade. Many families live in the west and the south-east, and the Ugadi and Sankranti celebrations get bigger every year. We book a lot of Hyderabad trips, so here is what we tell our own customers.
1. Book the whole family on one booking
It keeps everyone seated together, and if a flight changes, the airline moves you as a group. It also makes special meal and seat requests simpler.
2. Check baggage before you buy gifts
Allowances differ between airlines and fare types. Some fares include two checked bags, some include one. Ask us before you fill a suitcase with Tim Tams and Australian chocolate for the cousins.
3. Pick a layover that suits the youngest traveller
With a baby, a shorter total journey through Singapore or KL is usually kinder. With older kids, a Gulf route with a longer layover can be fine, especially if the fare is better.
4. Sort documents early
Australian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and check your passport has at least six months left.
5. Students and teachers: join MannPass
If you or your child are a verified Australian student or education staff member, MannPass is free to join and takes an extra AUD $25 off eligible return flights to India. Each pass is valid for 30 days and you can renew it. It cannot be combined with other promotions.
6. Spread the cost with PayLite
Family fares add up. With PayLite, you pay a low deposit to lock in your seats, then pay the rest in up to 26 weekly instalments before you fly. It is available on selected refundable fares. Afterpay is accepted too.
